The following are spinal cord injury terms which you may find helpful if you or a loved one has suffered a spinal cord injury:
Ambulation - Walking with or without using assistive aids, such as crutches.

Cervical Spine - Seven vertebrae located in the upper spine area (neck).
Diplegia - Paralysis which occurs to the same region of the body on both sides; paralysis of either both arms or both legs.
Hemiparesis - Weakness occurring to only one side of the body.
Hemiplegia - Paralysis which affects one side of the body; paralysis of either the right or left side of the body.
Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury - When a spinal cord injury victim can experience some sensation or has some amount of control of the body below the area in which the spine was injured.
Laminectomy - An operation which is performed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord.
Lumbar Spine - The strongest part of the spine, which is made up of five spinal vertebrae located in the lower back.
Monoplegia - Paralysis that occurs in one limb; paralysis of either one arm or one leg.
Paralysis - The inability for a person to move one or more limbs, typically resulting from nerve damage.
Paraplegia - Partial or complete paralysis of the legs.
Quadriparesis - Weakness in all four limbs (both arms and legs) due to disease or injury of the spinal cord.
Quadriplegia (Tetraplegia) - Paralysis which occurs to all four limbs; paralysis of both arms and both legs.
Rehabilitation - Numerous services that provide a person with the assistance to treat a disability, relearn skills, and function with a disability.
Sacrum (or Sacral) Vertebra - One of five pelvic bones that connects to the lumbar vertebra.
Spacticity - A condition in which muscles are hyperactive and make involuntary and uncontrollable jerking movements.
Spinal fusion - Surgery on the spinal cord in which metal rods or bone grafts are used to fuse an injured person’s vertebrae together.
Spinal Shock - A bodily response to a spinal cord injury which may last for hours or days, in which blood pressure may rise and bowel and bladder functions are impaired.
Thoracic Spine - Twelve vertebrae of the chest which are separated and cushioned by flat cartilage pads.
